A Member of the House of Representatives and Deputy Chair of the Delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (PABiH) to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Mr Vlatko Glavaš, is participating in a Parliamentary Course on legislative and policy measures aimed at preventing and countering the use of artificial intelligence and new technologies for the purposes of terrorism and violent extremism, held in Amman, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.
The Parliamentary Course, organised within PAM’s chairmanship of the United Nations (UN) Parliamentary Coordination Mechanism for Counter-Terrorism, is jointly hosted by the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) – Parliamentary Engagement Programme, the Shura Council of the State of Qatar, and the UNOCT/UNCCT Cybersecurity and New Technologies Programme.
The two-day event aims to raise awareness and strengthen the capacities of parliamentarians to effectively respond to the potential misuse of artificial intelligence and new technologies for terrorist purposes, while ensuring compliance with international human rights standards and humanitarian norms. It also seeks to promote good practices and legislative responses to the misuse of new technologies, as well as to enhance inter-parliamentary cooperation among PAM member states in the field of counter-terrorism.
Participants were addressed by the Secretary General of PAM and Chair of the UN Parliamentary Coordination Mechanism for Counter-Terrorism, Ambassador Sergio Piazzi; the President of the Senate of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Faisal El-Fayez; and Member of the Shura Council of the State of Qatar, Ahmed bin Hamad Almohanadi.
In addition to representatives of PAM member states, the Parliamentary Course in Amman brought together representatives of parliamentary assemblies taking part in the UN Counter-Terrorism Coordination Mechanism, as well as legal experts and specialists from parliaments engaged in legislative drafting and oversight functions.
